Following the successful implementation of the “elite classes”, SUMC launched the international program in Clinical Medicine (MBBS) in 2010 with approval of the Ministry of Education of China. The program is for international students who have a general interest in China and have the ambition to become an outstanding international clinician capable of practicing medicine in different countries around the world. The admitted international students join our top Chinese students in the “elite classes”. SUMC is committed to providing international students with quality medical education experiences that enable them to become competent physicians with solid medical knowledge, adequate clinical skills and professionalism. In 2013, SUMC passed the Ministry of Education’s national inspection of foreign student programs in medical schools, and we were encouraged to increase enrollment as our five year program was well recognized.
The MBBS program is five years in duration and leads to a Bachelor's Degree. The applicants who hold a Bachelor's Degree and have completed all the first year courses are eligible for direct entry to the second year.
The curriculum includes basic courses in the first year, system-based basic & clinical courses, skill training courses and elective courses in the second and third years, clinical courses in the fourth year, clinical internship and elective courses in the fifth year. Courses are taught in English by qualified basic science and clinical faculties, with established international textbooks and publications are as references for the students. SUMC adopts a student-centered educational model based on the concept of life-long learning and focused on skills development and attitude cultivation. Through interactive projects, joint case studies, group debates, book discussions and journal clubs, and effective self-study, students at SUMC quickly develop their professional competencies and skills. SUMC students are allowed to experience clinical practice throughout the entire program. Actual clinical exposure is maximized through elective courses, bedside instruction sessions, health services charity projects, clinical rotations and intensive clinical internships in SUMC-affiliated hospitals. The Clinical Skills Training Center at SUMC, a state-of-the-art clinical simulation and learning center designed as an actual modern hospital, also efficiently facilitates the acquisition of the professional skills and competencies required in clinical practice through the use of sophisticated simulation models, multimedia learning systems and professional standardized patients. In addition, SUMC adopts a mentorship model for this international medical program whereby international students are mentored by experienced and internationally-oriented professors as well as senior peer mentors who can help you navigate all of the stages of the program, including basic science stage and clinical stage.
International Assessment System
To assess student performance, we use internationally accepted assessment instruments such as Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), Teaching Objective Structured Clinical Examination (TOSCE), and United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). SUMC is the first and the only medical school in China that adopts USMLE exams to assess student performance. The average pass rate of our students from the "elite classes" in USMLE Step 1 is about 93% in the past five years.
The American students from the senior class who have passed the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 and have completed several months of clinical rotations in USA are now participating in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
Expected Learning Outcomes
Student competencies are the ultimate outcomes of a medical school education. Based on SUMC’s overall mission and objective, it is determined that professionalism, knowledge and practical skills are the three most important competencies for our students. Specific guidelines have therefore been developed to highlight the competencies.
1. Professionalism

• Show respect and loving care to the patients; act in the best interests of the people; have the ideals to devote one’s life to improving the physical and mental health of the public;
• Give priority to the best interests of patients; apply economic principles to health care for maximal efficiency in the use of resources;
• Uphold the standards of medical ethics; honor patients’ privacy needs and protect patients’ dignity;
• Exhibit critical thinking and analytical capabilities to solve problems through scientific approaches;
• Foster the spirit of innovation; strive for excellence; prepare oneself for life-long learning;
• Abide by the laws governing the medical practice and learn to legally protect the interests of oneself and the patients;
• Demonstrate good communication skills and the spirit of cooperation and team work; have good relationships with patients, nurses, and others.

2. Knowledge

• Demonstrate mastery of medicine-related mathematics, chemistry, behavioral science, humanities and social sciences, scientific methodology, normal human structures and functions in all stages of the development, the normal mental health state, the principles of health education, disease prevention and screening, the basic knowledge and methods of clinical epidemiology, the causes, risk factors, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of common and frequently occurring diseases.

3. Practical Skills

• Be able to take medical case histories and to conduct physical and psychiatric examinations in a systemic and standardized manner, showing the basic clinical skills in diagnosing and treating the common and frequently occurring diseases;
• Exhibit the abilities in clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis of diseases and pathogenesis; demonstrate skills in dealing with the acute, difficult and severe diseases;
• Have biomedical laboratory skills to conduct preliminary scientific research;
• Apply the principles of evidence-based medicine in field medical practice to improve clinical diagnosis and treatment; have the skills to formulate the diagnosis and treatment plans;
• Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills to establish harmonious relationships with patients and medical staff members and to promote the messages of health education publicly and effectively;
• Show good command of English in all forms of communications and have skills in the use of computers;
• Exhibit skills in self-directed studies which are well suited for life-long learning.

Research Opportunities
Strengthening the training of the research abilities of our students is also part of our “top-notch education”. Scientific training and cultivation of students’ scientific thinking and scientific attitude have been incorporated into our teaching plan. Students will be offered with laboratory instructions and research opportunities.
 

Graduation, Degree and Commencement
In order to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree from SUMC, you must

• Satisfy all SUMC requirements;
• Complete all the required courses and pass all the required examinations;
• Fulfill your financial obligations to the school.

Upon successful completion of the program, a Bachelor’s Degree of Medicine accredited by the Ministry of Education of China will be awarded.
Commencement for all graduating students is held every year in June. It is a university-wide event. Families, friends, and guests are invited to celebrate this important milestone with their graduates.

3. Applicants should abide by the laws of China and the Rules & Regulations of Shantou University.
4. Applicants for English-taught programs shall provide relevant language proficiency certificates according to the universities' requirements, like IELTS or TOEFL report.
